A man who is pregnant
The couple separated in , and in Beatie married his second wife, Amber, who worked at the daycare his children attended. They had a baby together in , to whom Amber gave birth. Today, Beatie and his family live a relatively quiet life in Phoenix, although Beatie occasionally takes on public-speaking jobs or small acting roles maybe you saw him as an extra in a U-Haul commercial.
But soon enough, word got out about his public past, he said. Not that he minds, exactly. I'm so proud that I was the one to bring my kids into the world. It's kind of like a badge. So I thought this film could be in lieu of meeting somebody — you could spend an hour and a half with me. What drove him to put himself through so much, physically and emotionally? He recalls signing the consent form to start testosterone and being told it would leave him infertile.
Trans men are still not being given the right information about their options, including how to carry their own children safely. But such a route is expensive, complicated and the chances of success are small. McConnell discovered there were trans men in America who were having babies, and spoke to his doctor about becoming pregnant.
Even then, he was still battling with the idea. He worried that he might be ridiculed or attacked; that people would think he was transitioning into a woman; that as a man carrying a baby he was having his cake and eating it. But for me, having that genetic link is something I felt I needed to have. There are no definitive figures when it comes to how many transgender men have given birth worldwide, or in Britain.
While it is still rare, it is not quite as rare as is sometimes claimed. When Scott Parker got in touch to say that he had given birth a few months earlier, the paper awarded him the honour and relegated Cross to second place. According to figures compiled by Medicare for Australia, one of the few national surveys, 75 people who identified as male gave birth naturally or via C-section there in , and 40 in I ask McConnell why it was so important for him to carry his own child and he replies with a question of his own: why does anybody want a child?
Why was it so important to be genetic parents? In the film, we see McConnell and his mother reminiscing over photographs of him as a child — tomboyish, blunt-fringed, energetic. The pictures brought back unhappy memories, he says, particularly the photographs taken during puberty and his teenage years. He was a bright child. Is that deliberate? This is my story of starting a family — so what on earth has my old name got to do with it?
Was he ever happy as a child? He looks surprised at the question. Yes, of course, he says — he was lucky to have an understanding family, and has many good memories.
We had really intense imaginary worlds that we would disappear into. He blushes. But they were very happy memories. Can he describe how it felt? In a case study , researchers documented the experience of one year-old transgender man who became pregnant 2 months after he discontinued testosterone therapy.
People who have had a bilateral mastectomy or other chest surgeries may not be able to chestfeed. For AMAB people, uterine transplantation may, in theory, be a possibility. However, this surgery is still experimental, even for AFAB people with uterine factor infertility. There is not enough research to confirm whether AMAB people can conceive and carry a baby to full term.
Before a person can consider having a uterine transplant, doctors will need to take their social, physical, and mental health into consideration. If a person wants to become pregnant, they may need to take a variety of hormones.
Often, this will involve hormone replacement therapy HRT , which typically provides estrogen and progestogen. Once the wall of the uterus becomes more than 7 millimeters in thickness, they must take a progesterone supplement. They must also wait 6 months after the surgery to allow for healing. It is only at this point that a doctor can transplant an embryo. After the surgery, there may be a chance that the body rejects the new uterus. A person will have to take immunosuppressants to reduce the likelihood of this occurring.
A person must take the immunosuppressive agents throughout the pregnancy to ensure that the body does not reject the transplant, which may expose the fetus to dangerous chemicals.
An obstetrician with special training in high risk deliveries will provide support for the duration of the pregnancy. Transgender men and AFAB individuals who do not identify as female may elect to undergo a range of medical treatments and surgical procedures during the transition process. If a person has undergone a partial hysterectomy — which involves the removal of the womb but not the ovaries, cervix, and fallopian tubes — it is possible for the fertilized egg to latch onto the fallopian tubes or the abdomen, resulting in an ectopic pregnancy.
It's kind of like a badge. Mostly, he marvels at how much the world, while still very much flawed, has changed since his story was in the spotlight. This was a time before most people understood gender identity and what it means to be transgender , let alone etiquette for speaking about someone who was.
Beatie was misgendered and deadnamed when someone uses the name a person was born with, rather than the name they currently identify with in the media. He was the butt of jokes on late-night talk shows. People were saying things on TV and in the media that if they came close to saying today, they would be immediately fired. It takes people time to understand the kindergarten level of transgender issues … this was Ph.
I was really scared for him. Reese said that had Beatie been more involved with the trans equality movement, he and others would have warned him against sharing his story. And yet, for the average person, Beatie was the first.
Beatie himself thought of his celebrity — fun at times, painful at others — as a tool to awaken people to the various ways that families can be formed, and hopefully ensure future trans, pregnant men would have a better experience.
Yet he acknowledges that even if public perception of his personal experience has shifted, there is still plenty more work to be done to support trans people hoping to start families — more training among health care providers, equitable access to fertility treatments and parental leave, for starters. There needs to be discussions about fertility, preservation.
