Why is doctrine so important in christianity

These three things are the foundational goals of all teaching and learning. The teacher communicates what is to be taught in a way that considers the background, learning ability, education, social experience, needs, and method of teaching that best enables the student to learn 1 Corinthians In this case, the teaching uses this approach to teach reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness so that the student can be what God wants them to be John God wants the teaching and learning to result in perfect righteousness through salvation by grace through faith Romans The use of the word throughly in the original King James is slightly different from thoroughly as found in other versions.

Throughly paints a picture of being furnished both inside and outside to produce good works by the power of the Holy Spirit living inside the believer. This internal motivation inspires us to produce good works from our hearts. Without correct doctrine, everything is adversely affected. We have a false view about the source of the Scriptures. We have a false view of what God wants us to be. We have a false view of where we differ from what God wants us to be.

We have a false view of what needs changed in our lives. In Biblical counseling, bad counsel or false doctrine is constantly exposed as the foundation of wrong feelings and motivations, which lead to wrong behaviors and outcomes John Simply stated, bad doctrine produces bad counsel and bad counsel produces bad outcomes.

Doctrine is the foundation of teaching and learning. Biblically, true doctrine provides the student the opportunity to learn what is taught, what should be learned, and what is the desired result that God wants us to know from His Scriptures. False doctrine prevents this from happening. Both produce differing feelings and motivations, which lead to differing behaviors and outcomes that have differing eternal consequences.

Here were the heroes of our movement. Why not ask them about doctrinal matters and learn from them? Why not discuss the issues and challenges we were facing in our churches, our culture, etc.?

But why not listen to and learn from veteran pastors and make sure we were teaching the right doctrine? Preachers are terrified that the offense of the gospel might turn someone against them; so they deliberately omit the parts of the message the world might not like.

Evangelicalism seems to have been hijacked by legions of carnal spin-doctors, who are trying their best to convince the world that the church can be just as inclusive, pluralistic, and broad-minded as the most politically-correct worldling … In this age of tolerance, what was once forbidden is now encouraged.

What was once universally deemed immoral is now celebrated. Marital infidelity and divorce have been normalized. Profanity is commonplace. So today, in many evangelical circles, we have clear doctrinal deviations from the Word of God left unchecked and unchallenged by both pastors and parishioners alike, because no one wants to offend anyone. John R.

I live not far from Cape Kennedy in Florida. When spaceships are launched, they must be on target to the finest degree. Just a slight deviation at the beginning can lead to great disaster.

The same is true in matters of Bible doctrine. Today there are major issues in evangelical churches of every stripe, including ours. Among them are issues like same-sex marriage, homosexuality and lesbianism, transgender bathrooms and transgenders serving in the military, having the government pay for gender reassignment surgery. Does the Bible allow for women elders and women pastors? Read more on The Role of Women here. Is Islam just another peaceful religion?

Do Muslims and Christians pray to the same God? And many others, as well as the issues already addressed in this series. When do you encourage him? But the doctrines of the Bible give you compass and chart through the storms. We have to be competent to answer questions. So what do you say when someone asks how God can allow a tsunami to sweep away scores of thousands of people?

Your atheist friend sneers at the food laws of Leviticus and asks why God changed his mind; why he lets you eat prawns and pork. Well, if I gave you a test on Bible doctrines, how would you do? You think you could answer all the questions without much difficulty? But remember, that would only scratch the surface. It would take a thousand lifetimes to explore all that God has revealed about himself in Scripture.

Keep growing, keep learning, keep thinking. Another quote from Peter:. Therefore dear friends, since you already know this, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever! And what about those of you who would struggle? Go back and listen to some of the sermons again.
