Why cant i visualize
Scientists are starting to map out the differences in the brains of aphantasics using functional magnetic resonance imagery, but these studies to date have been quite small. You may think people with aphantasia are at a disadvantage, that they have a disorder; but the recent publicity around the phenomenon has highlighted some counterintuitive truths.
Unless the test is particularly hard, aphantasics can also perform just as well as controls on memory challenges, which makes us think there may be multiple ways to succeed in these tasks. Indeed, it was quite a shock to read about Ed Catmull, the former president of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, admitting that he has aphantasia. And yet they succeed at their job. Visualization, as it turns out, is not synonymous with creativity. A physicist relating his experience admitted to having feared coming out of the pitch-black closet of aphantasia.

Look at it from the top, bottom — does it have any blemishes? How clearly can you see it? Some people see the apple perfectly, like watching a movie, while others have a very poor wavering image.
Although it might be hard to believe, a small proportion of otherwise healthy people report having no visual experience at all. One of the creators of the Firefox internet browser, Blake Ross, realised his experience of visual imagery was vastly different from most people when he read about a man who lost his ability to imagine after surgery. In a Facebook post , Ross said:. They too were astonished to discover that their complete lack of ability to picture visual imagery was different from the norm.
Visual imagery is involved in many everyday tasks, such as remembering the past , navigation and facial recognition , to name a few.
They often describe them as a conceptual list of things that occurred rather than a movie reel playing in their mind. When asked to draw directly from an image, both groups completed the task without significant performance differences. This result leads researchers to believe that although those with aphantasia lack visual imagery abilities, they appear to retain spatial memory, possibly indicating these two memory functions are stored differently in the brain.
Bainbridge and her colleagues hope to use MRI scanning in future studies to clarify where and how aphantasia manifests in the brain. Psychology is the study of the mind, how it works, and how it might affect behavior.

However, she's heard of many people with aphantasia report less "rich" dreams, memories, and imagined future scenarios. This indicates that for some people with the condition, aphantasia means you're deficient in creating imagery in the mind's eye, but you don't lack the ability altogether. While many people are born with aphantasia, there are reports that it can be induced, either after surgery or an injury or even as a result of a mental pathology such as depression, anxiety, or PTSD.
It seems that in most cases, aphantasia is something people have dealt with for most of their life and doesn't typically have wider implications or associated conditions. It is worth mentioning that additional research has suggested that "the potential impact of visual imagery absence on wider cognition remains unknown. While aphantasia by and large doesn't seem to affect people's quality of life, much of the science behind it still isn't fully understood.
Thankfully, Swart says there are ways to work around an inability to visualize the future , such as making a physical vision board or leaning on sound for inspiration. If you think you might have aphantasia, know there are plenty of resources available , as well as information and research, to help you understand and manage the condition.
